Arthur

Throughout history, there have been literary figures and stories that have endured for many years. These heroes and their legends transcend many generations, and are just as well loved in some generations as others. However, few characters in literature and few legends have survived as long and remained as popular as King Arthur. Many other legends have since been derived from King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Some of the most popular legends include the story of Gawain and the Green Knight, the legends of Lancelot, and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Yet the question remains as to why Arthur and his knights remain so popular today, after almost an entire millennium. Perhaps the real question should be asking why heroes and legends are necessary for humans. Exploring these questions, it can be inferred that King Arthur and his knights remain popular because of the necessity of their stories in the lives of men.

The legend of King Arthur exists in a group of written sources and images that is constantly changing. Unlike the great texts of the Abrahamic religions (the Torah, the Bible, or the Koran), there is in fact no authority to decide on the canonical works of this legend. On the contrary, each era, from the Middle Ages onwards, and more broadly each region and social group, has created its own Arthurian myth according to its needs, by drawing from known stories, adding or subtracting characters, and by modifying narrative elements.

This constant reinvention encourages us not to separate the medieval legend of Camelot from contemporary legends; the former is not more «authentic» than the latter. (World of English)
