Little Jon (II)
That evening, having inspected what they had brought him, he stayed up to dinner later than usual, sitting between them at a little round table. He was extremely excited.
«I don’t want to go to bed tonight,» he said, «I am simply tired of going to bed every night.»
It was quite late when he went to bed. His mother went up with him, and he undressed slowly so as to keep her there. When at last he was in bed, he said:
«Promise you won’t shut the door, will you?»
She promised she wouldn’t. Then kissed him and went out. For some ten minutes he tried to sleep, but he could not. He got out of bed, went to the window and looked out. It wasn’t dark, and the moon was very big. It had a human face, as if laughing at him, and he did not want to look at it. Then, remembering that his mother had said moonlit nights were beautiful, he continued to look out. The trees threw thick shadows, the lawn looked like spilt milk, and a long, long way he could see, oh! very far; right over the world; and it all looked different and beautiful.
Then he heard music, very soft-lovely! His mother was playing! He got back into his bed and pulled the clothes nearly over his head. The music stopped, then began again; sleepy music, pretty-sleepy-music-sleepy-slee...
And time slipped by, the music rose, fell, ceased. Little Jon turned in his sleep till he lay on his back, with one brown fist grasping his bedclothes. (by J Galsworthy)
