Community Helpers
A community helper is someone that does voluntary service for a community to better the livelihood of those who live in it. This can be done in a variety of ways including trash pickup, teaching local youth, fundraising for a local cause, or helping raise awareness about an issue affecting community members. Over the past several decades, especially after the Red Cross was active in assisting World War II soldiers, community helpers have gained a great amount of respect.
Thousands of organizations exist through which individual can assist one or more communities. The Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton during the Civil War and today volunteers help communities that need medical assistance in numerous place around the world.
The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in the United Kingdom by William and Catharine Booth as a Protestant Church organization that was meant for supplying essentials to the poor. Today, the Salvation Army has locations in 120 different countries where volunteers work in thrift stores that allow those with little money to buy items they need such as close and furniture.
Many community helpers wish to travel while doing a service and there are many agencies and organizations through which they can do so.
Doctors Without Borders is an international program in which medical professionals go abroad and treat communities that have been hit by disease. The Peace Corps is a United States federal government agency that send volunteers to different parts of the world to live with a community for two years and help them with a project based on the volunteer's skills and the community's needs. The United Nations also has international volunteer programs. There are also many domestic (within the country) volunteer opportunities. AmeriCorps has been active since 1993 in assigning volunteers for a year long service with a local organization. AmeriCorps is often called the domestic Peace Corps. Habitat for Humanity works with volunteers to help build new homes and sometimes entire neighborhoods to poor or disaster struck neighborhoods. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a United States organization in which volunteers mentor disadvantaged children. (www.englishworksheetsland.com)
