Global Warming

It is a fact that we are changing the global climate. We can see the early effects of global warming in the polar regions – the Arctic and Antarctic. Recently, things have been changing very quickly. The sea ice is melting earlier every year and this means that life for the polar bears is getting harder and harder, because they can only find food when the ocean is covered with ice. There are now twenty-five percent fewer polar bears compared to when the scientists first came there. Sea levels are rising because the polar ice and mountain glaciers are melting. This means that islands in the Pacific Ocean are disappearing under the sea. As well as this, the seas are also getting hotter. This is causing problems for both the rainforests and the coral reefs.

The warmer seas mean there’s less rain in the rainforests. In the Amazon rainforests, the larger trees are dying and there are serious droughts. As well as this, the warmer sea water is killing coral reefs in many parts of the world. Coral reefs are very sensitive to temperature changes and we’re now losing some of the richest environments in the world. But are we causing these changes or is it just a natural process? Is this the end of the world? Well, not yet. We have the power to slow, and possibly to stop, the rise of temperature. We have to produce less carbon dioxide, and to do what we have to change the way we live our lives. (adapted from World of English)
